Alternative to Photoshop

Devyn asks:
'...I was wondering if you know of anywhere safe to download adobe photoshop 7.0 or better for FREE?'

Hi Devyn,

You ask somewhat a loaded question.

The 'correct' answer is no, most software, even something as old as Photoshop 7.0, is still maintained by the copyright holder (or released as new versions), Adobe in this case and thus isn't something you can download.

In truth the answer is a hesitant yes, I know places you could download it, perhaps even relatively 'safe,' but I would highly recommend another avenue.

If you are looking for a free solution with most if not all the same functionality of photoshop, I recommend GIMP. GIMP stands for GNU Image Manipulation Program, but don't let the name scare you. It's a relatively easy to use and its a fully functional image editing suite. Because it falls under the GNU general public license, it is freely distributable and you can download it without charge (and better yet, you aren't crossing into any legal gray areas).

GIMP is a powerful tool for working with images, and if you are fond of the interface of Photoshop, there is even a modification called GIMPshop which behaves all the more similarly to Photoshop. Give them a try:

GIMP - www.gimp.org
GIMPshop - www.gimpshop.com
